FRIDAY

We’re a bunch of know-it-alls here at Worcester Magazine, and that trait makes us darn near insufferable at times. But we still think it’s a good thing to know stuff, especially if the information may be a tad on the obscure side. If you feel he same way, and if you know a thing or two about Worcester’s past, here’s your chance to put your certitude to work. The Worcester Historical Museum is presenting a slide show today from 1-3 p.m. at Goddard House (1199 Main St.), featuring mystery photographs of the Worcester area. They want to know more about these images — maybe you’ll recognize a building, neighborhood or person that will pinpoint when and where the photo was taken. You’ve got nothing to lose, the WHS will appreciate your help, and you might even have fun. Mysteries are great — but solving them is better. So stop by and help do your part (or at least have fun trying).

SATURDAY

With all the attention paid to the presidential campaign and high gas prices of late, you may have missed the announcement that the Empress of all the Russias will be holding court at the Museum of Russian Icons (203 Union St., Clinton) today from 1-2:30 p.m. Yes indeed, Catherine the Great (pictured at right, minus her horse), in the person of Norah Kyle, will guide visitors on a tour of the museum followed by tea. Hey, it beats Josef Stalin’s pocket knife collection.

Today is Mother’s Day, and there are any number of nifty things to do with Mom throughout the area — from brunches to special presentations and programs, it’s time to enjoy and be grateful to your maternal parent and enjoy the emerging spring season. One event that caught our eye is Mother’s Day at Old Sturbridge Village (1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge). All mothers get in for free today (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Children can enjoy indoor and outdoor activities, including a scavenger hunt and make-a-gift workshops. Adults can observe a portrayal of famed 19th century author Lydia Maria Child giving a talk on raising children and running a frugal household — and here’s a preview: It wasn’t easy. Heck, they didn’t even have iPods (but at least the kids went outside without helmets every now and then). For more information on Mother’s Day at OSV, visit www.osv.org or call 1-800-SEE-1830. o
