Stories and comments from Worcester’s Web diaries

 • Posted by “adam” on parkingban.org/blog: Last winter I received many Worcester parking tickets some of which I did not think were valid. I appealed them to the parking administrator; not all of them were dismissed, but some of them were indeed reduced. That is a story for another day. I recently learned of someone I know who received a parking ticket this winter, appealed it, and had it completely dismissed. His story, and some documentation, follows. “Patrick parked his car on Institute Road near the WPI football field but farther up the road from Park Avenue than the light post marking the end of the legal parking zone. After receiving a ticket, Patrick took photos (below) of the approximate location of where he parked and the sign indicating the area of no parking. He included the photos with a letter to the parking administrator and had a friend sign the letter as well to verify his statements. Shortly after, Patrick received a letter (below) dismissing his ticket, and he also noticed that the faded sign had been replaced.”

• Posted by “Mass Marrier” on massmarrier.blogspot.com: So at least two of those civic stalwarts at December’s Worcester demonstration likely filmed the incident that led to the charges of Larry Cirignano attacking a protester. It makes one wonder, in their six-week investigation, did the Worcester police locate the camera operators and their video? More to the point, with absurd accusations that the victim somehow planned getting shoved from behind and pushed to the ground, will these people’s God let them bear false witness on this? ... even worse, what if one or both of them realized what they had and destroyed evidence? They might justify it to themselves, but there must be a special place in their Hell for such actions. I can’t wait for the hearing and either plea bargain or trial.

The gradual elision of unaccented syllables is how we get from “God Be With Ye” to goodbye, or to the pronunciation Wuster from the original spelling “Worcester.” Learning phonetic reading and having dictionaries fools us into thinking that a syllable is an either/or thing. Jeet? for “Did you eat?” is one of those things that people learning live English learn, as opposed to those learning it in school somewhere. This is true of every language, which is why you thought you knew French but could barely understand anyone in Nice.

I started out around 4 and made it over to my lecture hall in about 45 minutes … not bad for a former runner. My walk passed me by the lovely Elm Park, which for those who have not been through Worcester, it is about the nicest place in the city, in my opinion. I absolutely love the high arching bridges over the series of small ponds. Now that we are in the smack dab of winter, they are solid with ice and I was pleasantly surprised to see a handful of people out skating. There were a few men here and there on hockey skates, smacking pucks around. A pair of girls were just messing about on a smaller secluded pond in the corner of the park. It really made me just beam as I walked by seeing people actually outside enjoying the outdoors. Up until that point, I had probably walked about half the way without running into many people on the sidewalks at all; a mailman here and there.

In true blog fashion, the spelling, grammar and punctuation of these selections are to the individual poster’s tastes. Comments? E-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
